Who Is Tom Verlaine?

Tom Verlaine was a guitarist and singer who was an important figure in the New York punk rock scene in the 1970s. A musician with a unique lyrical style, he had a cult following among fans. He was also an influential influence on younger bands, including Sonic Youth.

During his lifetime, he was a member of several bands. In the late 1960s, he played with a group called the Neon Boys. They changed their name to Television and recorded their first album, Marquee Moon, in 1977. However, the band broke up a year later.

Verlaine was born Thomas Miller in Wilmington, Delaware, in 1949. As a child, he studied saxophone and piano. The Rolling Stones' "19th Nervous Breakdown" influenced him to pursue a career as a musician. His interest in guitar led him to learn to play, and he subsequently joined the band Television.

Verlaine's songwriting was rooted in poetry, which had a great deal of influence on his work. He also collaborated with many other artists, including Patti Smith. Some of his songs were covered by David Bowie.

After the breakup of Television, Verlaine formed a solo career. He released a self-titled album in 1979. It was ranked as the 15th best album of the year by the NME. This was followed by a number of solo albums.

He also worked with Talking Heads, Ramones, and Blondie. He was involved in a musical collaboration with Patti Smith for many years.
